The Maternal Child, Paediatric & Adolescent Program provides quality care to mothers, newborns and their families.

This Program deals with women and their families from the ante natal period through the birth experience, the post partum stay in hospital, and follow-up after discharge.

The Paediatric/Adolescent Unit is an extension of the Program for the family as the newborn grows and requires either hospitalization or out-patient paediatric clinics.

The Maternal Child Program consists of 15 beds: 13 combined care and 2 ante natal beds. The birthing area consists of 2 LDR’s (labour, delivery, recovery rooms) 1 delivery suite and 2 labour room beds to accommodate the patients who are waiting to be moved into the LDR’s.

All patients at 20 weeks gestation or more who arrive at Hospital with a pregnancy related disease are seen as out-patients in the ante partum assessment room.

During the 2002/03 year 1333 out-patients were seen in the assessment room.

After the birth of the baby the Combined Care area promotes continuous mother/infant contact. A nurse is assigned to their care and will offer the mothers the opportunity to learn and practice newborn skills before discharge home.

After discharge the parents are encouraged to call back if they need help or visit the post partum teaching room.

Hospital linkages with Renfrew County Public Health Unit continue to be strong as both hospital & health staff work closely together through the Health Baby Healthy Children initiative by the Ministry of Health. A post partum screening tool ensures that all patients delivering will be screened by the Hospital staff. If special needs are discovered the Public Health Unit does an in-depth assessment of the family to determine what help is needed.

The Paediatric and Adolescent area remains a vital part of the Program. The nurses are cross-trained throughout the Program, enabling them to apply child care skills while maintaining competence in all areas.

Paediatric Day Surgery is now part of the Program. Two days a week children come to the Paediatric area, get ready for surgery and are cared for after surgery by the paediatric nurses until ready for discharge.

The Pediatric Program and physicians work closely in partnership and affiliation with the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario to develop protocols and determine care for children admitted to the Pediatric unit.

The Maternal Child, Paediatric, Adolescent Program continues to enhance the wellness philosophy focusing on the individual needs of the family.
