Pharmacy

The Pharmacy Department is responsible for drug use control, which complements and supports the medical services in order to achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes for the patients of Pembroke Regional Hospital.

Our principle technical functions include procuring and controlling drugs and chemicals, dispensing medications to inpatients and compounding specialty drugs according to the industry standards.

The PRH Pharmacy extends its services to two off-site programs, a 29 bed Complex Continuing Care Unit, located at Marianhill (which includes 3 Palliative Care beds) and a Long Term Care Unit, located at the VON Civic Complex. This unit was increased this year from 10 to 15 beds.

The role of the Pharmacist is to provide pharmaceutical care to inpatients, to work closely with physicians and nurses to ensure high quality drug policies and procedures as well as act as the hospital resource for drug information. Pharmaceutical care is accomplished through the following clinical activities: identifying and solving drug related problems, drug blood level monitoring, antibiotic surveillance, patient counseling, investigational and emergency drug release programs and adverse drug reaction reporting.

The Pharmacist, as a Teaching Associate for the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto, had the opportunity to host two Pharmacy students this past year. The students, under the Structured Practical Experience Program, spent two months providing Pharmaceutical Care to patients under the supervision of the Pharmacist. We also provide learning opportunities for Pharmacy Technician Students and High School co-op students.

Links to Community Programs include Pharmacist involvement in programs such as Heart to Heart, Strike Back at Stroke, Schizophrenia Clozaril Program, as well as various other community drug information sessions.
